ThroughDirt Farm

Emerging Grower

$7,000

The Project

ThroughDirt Farm will purchase and install a 30’x60′ double layer (with blower), heated Zimmerman high tunnel for multi-purpose use as an early season greenhouse for vegetable starts, growing space for rotating warm season crops/season extension, and also dry space for curing fall storage crops. This project will allow the farm to expand start production to fill the gap in the market. Additionally, the double layer of plastic will allow them to reduce propane usage in heating the space, which is in line with the farm’s environmental values.

Environmental Impact

An increased crop yield means that ThroughDirt Farm can offer more produce to local consumers weekly and, for storage crops like onions, longer into the winter. The farm utilizes organic practices, as well as reduced-tillage methods, cover cropping, and incorporates native hedge-rows, among other environmentally friendly practices. Additionally, the farm uses drip tape and mulch wherever possible to reduce irrigation. With the knowledge that anything that runs off of the farm ultimately ends up in Lake Superior (2 miles away), ThroughDirt Farm is very conscious of employing safe soil, fertility, and water conservation practices.
