The Project
Four Beans Farm will add a second growing tunnel to increase local food production while implementing practices (crop rotation and cover crops) and efficiencies that contribute to the farm’s sustainability and growth. This includes building a new tunnel and outfitting it with a flexible and appropriate irrigation system. It also adds a few tools to improve soil health, increase direct seeding capabilities, and improve harvesting ergonomics and efficiency. These tools include a broad fork, multi-row push seeder, and harvest cart.
Environmental Impact
Four Beans Farm will promote organic practices by improving crop rotation and cover cropping in its tunnel system. Crop rotation reduces pest and disease carryover, and the additional tunnel extends the number of seasons between planting the same crop. Cover cropping improves water retention, reduces erosion and runoff, and promotes healthy soil life. The project will also improve irrigation efficiency using high-quality, reusable drip lines, multiple zones, and timers.
“The addition of another properly outfitted high tunnel will increase protected vegetable production space, allow for season extension, and improve growing and harvesting efficiencies.”
