Whole Foods Co-op
Recycled Glass Mural Proposal

Submitted by Ron Benson from Benson Glass Art

I would like to build four giant fused glass murals for the Whole Foods Co-op exterior. The mural designs would be based on a stylized depiction of Lake Superior waves and sky. The murals would be made almost entirely out of recycled window glass. All of the glass would be locally sourced and prevent a large quantity of old windows from entering the waste stream.

The murals would be mounted on both sides of the entry doors. They would measure six feet high by seven feet wide and six feet high by eight feet wide. The other two murals, both of which measure six by six feet, would be around the corner from the entry on the north side of the building.

Co-op members could become involved in the project by donating any old windows that they would like to recycle. This could contribute to their sense of ownership and pride in the Co-op.

The Design

I believe that there is potent symbolism in water. It is elemental - all life and good health is dependent upon it. We have the good fortune of living next to the largest body of fresh water on the planet. We have a choice, we can live sustainably with respect for the earth, air, and its waters and be wise consumers, too.

I am an environmentalist. I believe there needs to be a cultural shift to organics and sustainability in all aspects of our lives. Anything that can increase awareness of this need should be implemented. My recycled glass murals will draw positive attention to Whole Foods Co-op and its ethos.

The Installation

The art project is expected to be installed October 3 - 4 with a dedication on our Member Appreciation Day on Wednesday, October 8. Please excuse our dust while we install this beautiful piece of art.
